UK and Ukraine Sign Landmark AI Defence Partnership, Granting Britain Access to Battlefield Data Lab

Prime Minister Andy Burnham and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have signed a new artificial intelligence partnership in Kyiv, making the UK the first foreign nation to gain access to Ukraine’s classified Avengers AI Labs database.

Access to Battlefield Data

The agreement allows British researchers and technology companies to tap into a vast repository of real-world combat data collected by thousands of daylight cameras and infrared sensors positioned across Ukraine’s front lines. These sensors capture millions of objects including tanks, artillery, air defence systems, infantry, and aerial targets such as Shahed drones and reconnaissance UAVs. The data feeds directly into the Avengers Lab to train new AI models.

Exchange of Expertise

Under the deal, the UK will support Ukraine with access to its world-leading universities, researchers, technology companies, and the third-largest AI ecosystem globally. In return, Ukraine will share its hard-earned operational experience and unique datasets, allowing both nations to accelerate the development of AI tools for defence and national security. The partnership forms a key component of the broader 100 Year Partnership between the two countries.

Focus on Defence and National Security

While the technology has potential applications across public life—from air traffic control to train systems—the initial focus will be on defence. Engineers, academics, businesses, and military operational experts from both countries will form an AI cell dedicated to solving key national security challenges. The partnership also includes plans to explore additional platforms for collaboration.

Pilot Projects Underway

Several pilot projects have already been launched with three British startups: Bristol’s Sintela, Oxford’s Mind Foundry, and London’s Skyral. The first trial technology is set to be deployed at a UK defence site to protect bases from protestors and hostile actors attempting to gather intelligence.

Broader Context

The announcement follows Prime Minister Burnham’s confirmation that defence firm MBDA has been authorised to release classified information on UK components for the long-range SCALP missile. The AI partnership is seen as a way to transform Ukraine’s battlefield experience into long-term technological advantages for both countries, saving lives on the front line while strengthening critical infrastructure at home.
